The applicaiton is in word format so if you don't have word please go to www.openoffice.org and download the free software to be able to read and complete our application. If you are still having trouble please email us!

The person filling out the adoption application and that can sign the adoption agreement must be 18 years old.

Adoption process- Takes 7-10 days from application to adoption
1. Please READ and UNDERSTAND each one of our policies located below.
2. Complete an adoption application and send it to us for review.
3. After we review your application and approve it (24-48 hours) we will schedule a date and time for you to come over and look at the piggies that are available for adoption.

We may check out a reference provided by you at the time of application to verify that everything is correct on your application. A housecheck also may be done if deemed necessary by an authorized person from Crazy Cavies Guinea Pig Rescue.

Our adoption fee for all pigs is $20 each or $30 for a true bonded pair (it will be marked in the written description of the piggies). We are only accepting cash or check right now for payment, but hopefully in the future credit cards will be added.

We prefer emails for contact because we usually are busy with full-time jobs to support the rescue and only get to our voicemails very late at night. You may call also if you have any questions but it may take up to 48 hours to reply during busy days. You must leave a voicemail or we will not call you back as we don't know who to call back and talk too. At the time of adoption there is an adoption agreement that will be signed between Crazy Cavies Guinea Pig Rescue Inc. and yourself.

ADOPTION POLICIES

Please read our policies below before sending an application to us. If you do not agree with all of our policies you will be denied adoption from us. All policies are in place for the betterment of the guinea pigs and are the standard in all guinea pig only rescues throughout the country.

1. You must adopt two cavies unless you already have one or more.

Why? Guinea pigs are herd animals and must have the same species interaction to live to their fullest potential. Would you want to live alone with no interaction or way to communicate with humans? Doesn't sound like much fun does it!

2. Plain pellets, Unlimited Grass hay (timothy, orchard grass or bluegrass), Filtered water and veggies must be provided daily.

Pellets cannot have seeds, nuts, corn, or colored pieces in them.

Why? They are horrible for guinea pigs and cause obesity, which leads to illnesses and eventually premature death.

Grass hay needs to always be available and should be the main staple of a guinea pigs' diet.

Why? It helps wear down their teeth properly and keeps their digestive system moving.

Water should be filtered with NO ADDITIVES.

Why? It can change the taste of the water and may cause dehydration from not drinking enough water. It also contains added sugar that is not good for guinea pigs.

Veggies must be provided daily.

Why? Essential vitamins and minerals are obtained through veggies and are far superior to any supplement that you can buy. A good source to learn about great veggies is www.guinealynx.com.

3. Must have a C&C cage or custom built cage or be free range (no petstore cages).

Why? Petstore cages are way too small and not even close to the proper size for permanent housing for piggies. Minimum size required is a 2x4 C&C cage or custom built 30"x57" cage. These size requirements are based upon the guidelines on www.guineapigcages.com . You may purchase this from us or you can build one before adoption. Visit our cage page tab to learn more about the C&C cages we sell.

4. The cage must be in an area that allows human interaction daily.

Why? This will help you bond easier with your guinea pig(s) and become more social and enjoyable to be around. Your guinea pig and you will be much happier if your guinea pig is socialized. This goes along with the "out of sight, out of mind" theory

5. No breeding is allowed with any of our cavies.

Why? Most of our guinea pigs are past the breeding age and of course there are thousands euthanized each year due to overpopulation. If you want babies, we occasionally get them so be patient and inquire about them as we can usually find them some place that is about to euthanize them.

6. No permanent outdoor housing will be allowed.

Why? Cavies DON'T sweat and overheat quickly in the heat. Especially in Florida! Also predators are looking for easy and vulnerable prey.

7. No wheels or balls will be allowed to be used with the cavies.

Why? Both are extremely hard on their back and feet and may paralyze them. This happens over time and not over night.

8. The adoption fee is $20 per guinea pig or $30 for a true bonded pair.

Why? This modest fee helps fund our rescue to keep operating.

9. No housing with other species in same cage is allowed. E.g. rabbits, chins, suggies, rats, hamsters.

Why? A guinea pig can be killed or severely injured in a split second by another animal or also catch diseases from those other animals that may be carriers.

10. We do not adopt out our cavies as surprise gifts.

Why? We want to ensure the recipient wants a guinea pig(s) and knows how to care for them and they can pick out the guinea pig(s) they like.

11. We do not adopt out to daycares or schools.

Why? Guinea pigs are often neglected in schools and NO pet should be subject to this type of environment (extremely stressful).

12. The primary caretaker must be an adult over the age of 18, we do not adopt out to children only.

Why? Many children lose interest and the guinea pig is then neglected and forgotten about. We love adopting to families that have children as guinea pigs are a great pet for all ages!

Our rescue is located in Lauderhill, FL off the corner of Oakland Park Blvd and 441. We will give you directions to our rescue when we decide to interview you. We do this for the safety of our piggies and also ourselves as the rescue is operated out of our home and other foster homes. Hopefully we will have a seperate physical shelter soon where you can come and visit anytime.
