Crazy Cavies Guinea Pig Rescue Inc. was founded on March 18, 2008 in the state of Florida. The rescue is operated primarily by Jeremy and Tracy Henle with help from our webmaster Dana Deboer. We also have help from foster homes and volunteers in our community.
We started unofficially in late 2006 by taking in guinea pigs from local petstores that we worked at and finding other homes for them because the petstores were not allowed to re-sell them. We were in return subjected to the horrendous conditions the stores keep guinea pigs in and horrible advice that the local petstores were giving out (still goes on) and by late 2007 we decided that the need for a rescue organization that focused solely on guinea pigs was needed and therefore in March 2008 Crazy Cavies Guinea Pig Rescue Inc. was born!! Later that year we became an official 501(c)3 non-profit charitable organization.
All of the guinea pigs in our care are weighed weekly, housed on fleece bedding in cubes and coroplast (C&C) cages, fed Oxbow brand guinea pig pellets, given an unlimited amount of grass hay (timothy hay, bluegrass hay, and/or orchard grass) and given veggies daily.
When a guinea pig is surrendered to us or we rescue them they are quarantined. All of them are quarantined for a minimum of 3 weeks, treated for mites and taken to the vet if deemed necessary. Females are held for an additional 51 days to ensure that they are not pregnant.
Please keep in mind that we run this rescue out of our house right now and through a few foster homes. We do have real full-time jobs that help pay for the cost of operating the rescue and only have a limited amount of time to travel and hold adoptions. We are pretty flexible with dates and times for adoptions and work with you the best we can.
